In nature, nothing remains motionless. Mosses expand silently on the stones, lichens colonize the ancient walls, and fungi find their way into forgotten crevices. Each organism traces invisible patterns that, over time, transform the surface they inhabit. The sculpture Folia Moss is born from that contemplation: an attempt to capture, in a material and contemporary gesture, the silent vitality of these beings who
paint with life the skins that cover the world.
Inspired by the way mosses change color depending on humidity, sun, or shade, Folia Moss becomes a metaphor for impermanence. In it, the tones degrade as if they were subject to the same light that touches a wet stone in the morning or dry under a midday sun. The viewer finds himself in front of a living, yet static, landscape that evokes the ephemeral and the eternal at the same time.
The piece is made up of more than 4,000 modules, each approximately 3 x 3 centimeters. These tiny units, assembled as an organic skin, build a three-dimensional tapestry that transforms according to distance and gaze. Up close, the modules reveal their individuality; From a distance, they dissolve in a fluid pattern, as happens with lichen colonies on a volcanic rock or with the expansion of mold on a porous surface. Repetition becomes rhythm, and rhythm becomes a kind of visual breathing.
The modules are organized into ten chromatic ranges that go from a light color to an intense color of the same palette, this first sculptural result being a mixture of shades of pinks and intense reds. This range of colours is no coincidence: it alludes to the vital pulse, to the trace of humidity that gives life and to the wear and tear of time that dries up and transforms. Thus, the viewer can read a constant oscillation in the work, like a petrified heartbeat on the wall.
But Folia Moss is not just a contemplative object; it is also an invitation to reflect on the relationship between the human and the natural. The work, with its modular precision, arises from a rational and meticulous, almost mathematical process. However, the end result is organic, unpredictable, and close to the spontaneous patterns of life. This tension between order and chance, between control and fluidity, constitutes its poetic force.
When confronted with the sculpture, the visitor does not simply observe an intervened wall:
he experiences a reminder that the most humble and silent processes of nature – the advance of moss, the flowering of a fungus, the persistence of a lichen – are, in fact, expressions of beauty, resistance and transformation. Folia Moss is, then, a celebration of the small that becomes big, of the discreet that ends up occupying all the space, of the ephemeral that becomes eternal when crystallized into art.
